Company email (August 2022)
"We use some gelatin on a small portion of our reds that go into our Columbia Valley and Indian Wells tiers of wine. So, we have historically said they are not vegan. The gelatin is a fining agent that is settled and filtered out of the wine. So the wine doesn’t contain any gelatin, but it is used in the process of making the wine."
Based on this explanation, we cannot say this wine is considered to be vegan due to the fining agent used for filtration. (The Columbia Valley and Indian Wells tiers do not contain any dairy ingredients or derivatives)
All of our red wines outside of our Columbia Valley and Indian Wells tiers are considered to be vegan, as they do not use any animal products."
Company email (December 2020)
"While we typically do not make a practice of using animal products in our wines we may, on occasion, resort to the use of egg whites (on a very small scale) to reduce excessive or harsh tannins. We do our best to manage tannin pick up in the wines during fermentation but, every once in a while, a wine is too big, too tannic or too drying to fit the our profile. "
Company email (June 2019)
"The Chateau Ste Michelle Columbia Valley Dry Riesling does qualify as vegan."
