Company email (December 2021)
"My name is Alex Chasko, I am the master blender and distiller for the Teeling Whiskey Co. Thank you for your email and great question about the wine casks we use for our Single Grain. The wine is not certified as being Vegan but having said that I would be surprised if any clarifying agents are in the casks when we get them. I would be even more shocked if any of the whiskey was exposed to any fining agents from the wine. There is a good website with information about the use of finings in wine here (https://www.awri.com.au/industry_support/winemaking_resources/frequently_asked_questions/fining_agents/)
Basically our casks have been rinsed and cleaned before they were shipped to the EU for filling with our whiskey. There is a small amount of liquid that is trapped in the staves and does impart a flavour and aroma on the whiskey but I don't think there is any risk of this liquid containing finings.
My understanding is that mostly the use of finning agents in wine making takes place outside of the casks. But if there were some material that made it into the cask or were even added directly into the casks my feeling is that these large molecules would not be absorbed into the wood. I think that they also would have been removed during the cleaning process before the casks are shipped to us.
Another factor is that the wine in the staves is normally only 1-2 litres of volume. We then fill the casks with 220 litres of whiskey so the dilution rate would be less than 1% of the volume. This whiskey is then filtered with a 5 micro filter which would remove any possible finings that might be in the whiskey."
Company email (October 2016):
"My name is Alex Chasko I am the master distiller and blender for Teeling Whiskey. I am happy to say that all of our products are vegan friendly. I am not sure why someone would have told you that isinglass was used in our process but it is not. None of our products use animal ingredients or products and we do not sub-licence any of our process. As required by Irish and EU law the only ingredients in our whiskey are grain (barley or maze), water, and yeast. We do mature the whiskey in oak casks but this is part of the maturation process and is not considered an ingredient." [email was prompted by a claim (debunked above) during a tour that isinglass was used]
Sandra notes (April 2016)
"I contacted Teeling to find their whisky is vegan and they say it is indeed."
