Company email (July 2011):
"To the best of my knowledge we qualify as having vegan products to the best of my knowledge. However, it would depend on how far back in the food chain you want to go. For example Monks Ale is made using only water, yeast, three varieties of hops, three types of malts and CO2 (for carbonation). We filter the beer using a chalk based filter. No other additives or other materials are used in making the beer. None of the hops or malts are certified as organic so I cannot attest to the actual growing process. For example, I have no idea what (chemical or animal based) fertilizers may have been used to grow these ingredients All the ingredients have USDA certifications that they are fit for use in making products that are safe for human consumption. The Monks' Wit uses the same ingredients but uses only two hops and one malted barley. It also has red wheat, white wheat, flaked oats, bitter orange peel, sweet orange peel, coriander, and another spice. For this beer, all the ingredients and sources are approved by the FDA. We do a coarse filter using a chalk based filter.
Yes, our beer is also produced under contract by Sierra Blanca Brewing Company in Moriarty, New Mexico. They use the exact same ingredients and processes because we source all the ingredients for both breweries."
